The Hero's Journey: Exploring Often Overlooked Elements in Learning Games

Utah ATD is partnering with Chattanooga ATD to bring you this special learning event! Arrive early to network with talent development professionals in the Chattanooga region. This event is held at a different time than usual because of the regional time difference.

Today's learners expect a lot from their learning games. Grabbing their attention and keeping it requires technology that features amazing graphics, feature functionality, badges, and all manner of techno-wizardry. This session will explore often-overlooked elements in learning games that have more to do with the story---the narrative---which can take surprisingly little time to craft, but can make all the difference for learner engagement and immersion. We'll explore a proven model with examples that demonstrate these elements in detail. Core concepts from the hero's journey apply to all incredible stories---from Rocky Balboa to Luke Skywalker to Indiana Jones, these elements are the reason people care to dedicate their attention. Dedicate your attention to this session and return to your job with story elixir.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply a proven model for effective game elements that follows best practices for storytelling and narrative
  • Design basic elements in learning games to elevate the immersion and engagement factors
  • Evaluate game elements within the context of the Hero's Journey model

Note: This is a virtual learning event. You will receive a registration confirmation with a Zoom link.
